Much like a beaver
The benthic zone is the lowest ecological region of a stream, river, lake or sea. Within these beds and substrates, and immediately above, live a community of organisms; bacteria and fungi, and invertebrates such as crustacean.
Bivalve molluscs; oysters, mussels, clams and scallops are vital members of the aquatic ecosystem; sequestering carbon, forming reef habitats to home other forms of life, and filtering gallons of water a day - macro ecologically operating as the intestine of the coastal ecosystem.
This film explores the handling of bivalve molluscs on the coastlines of Wales, within the presence of human infrastructural regimes that dominate aquatic ecologies, however, here, this narrative is de-centred focusing on both the human and nonhuman symbiotic acts of care that take place within these intertidal realms.
